I came across this Austrian channel again while browsing through my »Radio« tagges bookmarks and i have to recommend it to everyone who’s into soul-, funk, disco and deep house. Beside a pretty decent daytime program hosted by the Superlfy team itself there are several shows hosted by the local music scene, among others the radio show by the illustrious »Deep House Mafia«. If you’re from Vienna you’ll also enjoy the latest city updates. A nightly show called »98.3 Nightfly« brings you the latest dj mixes by the likes of Carl Craig, Larry Heard, Giles Peterson, Jazzanova and more. Now if that’s not a reason to tune in…

If you’re aware of what’s been going on in the city of Essen for the past few month and years you might have noticed that there are three guys, namely Dplay, Langenberg and last but not least Manuel Tur who have been causing quite a stir in the scene of house music, mixing things up not only nationally with a bunch of releases on labels like Drumpoet Community or Compost Records. So it’s merely been a matter of time until those three were about to launch their very own club night. The day is coming closer now and at the end of september we’ll be able to enjoy those guys not only solely at one of their numerous gigs in and around Germany but altogether in their own hometown at one single spot. The so called »Goethebunker« which has already been home to several electronic clubnights should serve as the perfect venue, providing a kind ambient and the perfect underground feel for the deep-disposed crowd. So calendar the 27th for some good ol’ deep house disco tech dub and don’t miss this great event.

27/11/08 - Manuel Tur, Langenberg, Dplay

Due to organizational trouble (LP was only two weeks ago) Juicy Beats promoters even had to cancel and re-book various acts. Nevertheless the line-up was as good and versatile as it has ever been. Which means you had the chance to choose between 14 floors, each one adressing a different style, from hip hop over dancehall, funk and jazz to eletronic and techno. That is the actually the idea behind Juicy Beats, covering a good range of music, bringing loads of different people together and represent the quality and versatility of contemporary music.

Even though the weather was to become quite rainy nobody seemed to hesitate about coming, so the park was as filled as every year. There was however lots of space, and even in the evening when places got crowded, you always had enough room for dancing (and breathing).

Luckily, weather was still good in the afternoon so we had a good time checking the different floors and chilling at the main stage, where eventually my act of the day was going to play: Sonar Kollektiv Orchestra. At about 5 pm the band (made of 15 musicians) launched their show with some classic tunes from the Sonar Kollektiv label. Awesome! Seeing them live, especially singer Clara Hill, who must be one of my favourite female artists, was very uplifting. Highlight of their show were in my opinion the re-jazz of »I got somebody new« by Georg Levin and the acoustic version of Âme’s »Rej« where the crowd started screaming (which i find pretty uncommon for a jazz act).

Afterwards we went to see some other stages like the Worldbeat floor, which was sponsored by German radio station »Funkhaus Europa«, or the Funky Bobbystyle floor, where some popular funk and disco got us into dancing mood. (how could Michael Jackson’s Thriller not boost your mood?)

The later the evening the darker the music and so we went to dance to some groovy deep house at Hotel Shanghai’s dancefloor (local club in the city of Essen) where at that time Langenberg (buddy of Manuel Tur) was dropping tunes. Musically on a similar level was the last destination of our tour, the circus, where head of Juicy Beats Carsten Helmich and his friend Ingo Sänger (both part of the Taxi Club) were playing. Solid deep rocking stuff, although the sound system seemed a little to quiet. I have to admit though that i was pretty wasted by that time…

Tiredness became also my biggest enemy on our way home, that took ridiculous 3 hours. Anyway, the festival was once again amazing. I have to thank anyone who’s been with me for a great time. Photos will be online soon… Stay tuned and until next year :-)

As reported in there most recent newsletter, New Zealand’s finest Funk/Reggae/Soul group are dropping a new album in July. I’ve already been a big fan of their studio debut »Based On A True Story«, which was packed with beautiful songs and ballads. It has put a whole lot of good memories in my mind, in large parts i would say due to the distinctive voice of Dallas Tamaira aka Joe Dukie. The first single »The Camel« will be released the 21st of july. And for the lucky ones (in mostly France and the UK), FFD are touring Europe in late 2008…

That’s also where its name originates. “Panoramix” is the name of the b-side, a weird psychedelic groover. I’m not sure if this should be called house or techno, it’s actually somewhere in between but should definitely work fine sometime after midnight, when the crowd is already drenched in sweat. The other side covers the housy side of things, with a warm groove and a more punchy rhythm, but it’s nevertheless equipped with the same bizarreness. To be dropped on 19th May and I’m sure this is gonna cause quite a stir…

So, dinner at Cologne’s most famous Schnitzel shop “Oma Kleinmann” where we had the probably most bulky piece of meat in our lives. Then, we went to hang out at several bars in Zülpicher Street to make ourselves drunk with some Bombay Tonic. At about midnight we went to Triple A, a club that normally stands for rather mainstreamish electro parties.

But that night was going to become the complete opposite. Coke didn’t spare money nor taste in music to get three of America’s greates house artist into town, supported by Switzerland’s up-and-coming producer Quarion. When we entered the club, a resident was already banging the floor with some tech house. Pretty hard stuff for the early hour but from what i know that’s what most warm up Djs seem to be like at the moment…

Anyway, as soon as Quarion took over, the music became groovier, funkier, deeper, more danceable and the spot was already packed. It was time to get on the dancefloor where we were about to stay most part of the night. After a very good set Omar S continued to spin the decks and played some of his dirty Detroit stuff, as we know from his productions. After two hours or so, Robert Owens took over and the crowd began to scream right when his voice appeared. One hour of tough progressive house was about to come and some of the people had to use earplugs to stand the volume. By that time, most people were drunk already and partied hard to his relentless beats.

Theo Parrish was still a long time coming. But when he finally took over, he turned the floor inside out. Wicked set of disco, funk and soul stuff. I’ve heard him once play in Cologne but this time he mad the crowd turn mad. Brilliant!

Ok, so that was my short review of a truly good night. Thanks to Coca Cola for supporting underground music. It’s so worth it!

I’ve done approx. 60 photos that evening so check out the PICS section for some impressions of the night…

Coming across their webpage though denies this statement, visually… Musically, sthml Recordings (whatever way this might be pronounced) stands for warm sounding releases.I’ve been stumbling over the label lately while browsing for a Baaz release I’ve heard in the most recent Freerange Records podcast. Beeing their 15th outcome, the Baaz release, named Granular Senses EP, includes 4 stunning deep groovers for the club. “Something” must be my personal favourite, such a good vibe in it!Also the forthcoming stuff promises to be of good quality: Essen’s up-and-coming Langenberg drops his second release called “Slowdown EP” and also another Baaz EP is already announced. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it…

Well known for their releases on Freerange Records, Compost Black and Drumpoet Community, i guess we can expect a rather deeeep and groovy house affair. The party will be hosted as an all-drinks-for-free event. Sounds weird? Yes, why should someone spend his money on other people’s drunkenness? Well, the idea is that at the end you gotta show up with an envelope which can - measured by your personal estimation - contain any amount of money, from zero to unlimited. Of course it would be a shame to not support this concept and proper line-up with some bucks, wouldn’t it? Guest list applications can be submitted via their homepage. I’ll be there!

For those who don’t know, the 2 million seller will soon be available as a CD/DVD package including several bonus tracks and videos. While disc one covers the entire original album, disc two is filled with some of their remixes, rarities and demo sessions recorded during the late nineties and disc three providing a 60 minute documentary and video clips of the album’s most popular tracks. Release date is determined as the 15th April. I think this might be worth a blog entry, as I’m going to purchase this.
